Frequently Asked Questions
1. How old can my child start learning piano?
Answer: There is no definite answer. The normal case is 5 years old, but ultimately it depends on every child. Some children may be more mature than others. Children who are musical and show interest in learning music at a very young age may be ready to learn as early as 3.5 years old. I have taught several kids from 3.5 years old and they can even sit for examinations at the age of 5.
Therefore, never limit and underestimate what your children can achieve.
2. How long should my child practise over the week?
Answer: Quality practice is the key. For example, a 30 minutes of quality and focused practice is better than a 60 minutes of practice without concentration.
Naturally as your child progresses to higher levels, longer practice time is required. In essence, what is taught in the last lesson should be well learnt, practiced and perfected before the next lesson.
3. When can my child sit for exam?
Answer: In general, a child sits for exam at least once a year. As soon as your child is ready, he/she will be enrolled for exams. I believe in piano examinations as an accurate and recognized indicator to a student's learning progress.
4. Can my child skip grades?
Answer: Preferably not! If your child is diligent and motivated, I will prepare them to sit for more than 1 exam a year. It depends on your child's motivation and determination to commit himself/herself. Every exam grade has its technical requirements to master. My grade 3 student who is technically and musically sound could play better than a 5th or 6th grader who plays poorly.
